A very good copy of the early 1875 printing of Jules Verne's classic tale of Captain Nemo and his submarine the Nautilus. The title page states - "From the edition of James R. Osgood & Company," considered the true first edition of 1873. This edition is published by George M. Smith & Company, Boston and sold by subscription only. Page 303 lists University Press Cambridge - Printed by Welch, Bigelow & Company. The book features the iconic frontispiece illustration, "My Blood Curdled" with tissue guard still present along with 109 additional black and white plates throughout by Édouard Riou. Condition: 8vo. 303 pp. With all illustrated plates present. Bound in the publisher's green cloth with elaborate gilt and black stamping to the front and spine, the original brown coated endpapers have recently been refreshed, and signatures have been tightened. Typical wear to edges, corners bumped and rubbed with some fraying and softening and fraying to the cloth spine tips. Some staining visible on the front boards with a few spots on the rear as well. The interior is unmarked with some foxing and staining to a few pages and a small tear to the upper corner of the title page with small loss to the corners of pgs. 122,123,193,275 and to the upper corner of the plate between page 272-273. Overall, a very good copy of this early Smith & Company printing.
