An outstanding example of the scarce London first edition of "Selected Works of William Penn to which is Prefixed a Journal of his Life." Penn was a renowned English writer, religious thinker, influential Quaker and founder of the Province of Pennsylvania during the early American British colonial era of King Charles II. Chapters include a lengthy letter from William Penn, Proprietor and Governor of Pennsylvania in America dated 1683, The Christian Quaker and his Divine Testimony, and The Advice of William Penn to his Children Relating to Their Civil and Religious Conduct.  A large, heavy Crown Folio (16x11") 862 pages - Original calf leather binding nicely restored with new leather spine and black leather spine labels with titles stamped in gilt, and with new endpapers. Edges worn with corners bumped and rubbed with a bit of loss, toning as is usual to the text block and some intermittent foxing to some outer page edges, a tear to the lower corner of page 680 (not affecting the text block). Three small, Library stamps of Trinity College and New College of London on the front preliminary, the Title page and the final blank end page. Overall, one of the nicer examples of Penn's Selected Works of 1771 available anywhere in the market today.
