A good or better copy of the first edition of David Ramsay's 1779 Military Memoirs of Great Britain: or, a History of the War, 1755-1763. With elegant copperplates. Printed by Churnside & Wilson, Edinburgh. Printed for the Author and sold by the principal booksellers in Great Britain. Ramsay was one of the first major historians of the American Revolutionary War. He served as a delegate to the Continental Congress from 1782 - 1786. His Military Memoirs includes several chapters on the war in North America, including the Louisbourg expedition, the defeat of the British Army at Ticonderoga, the capture of Quebec, the French surrender, and the death of General Wolfe. Condition: 8vo. 470 pages plus the Index and scarce errata sheet. 11 of 12 plates accounted for with just the frontis portrait of George II missing. Full leather with new calf spine over the original leather boards with new black spine labels and titles stamped in gilt. Heavy edgewear with the corners rubbed and bumped, scrapes and scratches to the front and rear. Heavy toning and foxing with some staining to the endpapers and a number of interior pages with chipping to a few page edges and creasing to the corners of a few pages. Some pencil markings including a sketch of Boscawen. Provenance includes an early ink inscription on the front flyleaf of Berent Scollay to Henrich Jansen in June of 1820, Jansen of North Bergen, Norway to his friend A.P. Crowell on Oct. 20th of 1821. Overall, a good copy of this 245-year-old important history of the Seven Year War by David Ramsay.
