Edgar Rice Burroughs, The War Chief. Chicago: A. C. McClurg & Co., 1927.

First edition in the original pictorial dust jacket, and an exceptional presentation copy inscribed by Burroughs to his brother Henry Studley “Harry” Burroughs:

“Dear Harry / your little brother has wrote another book / here it is, Ed. / Tarzana Ranch Oct. 4, 1927.”  A warm, early inscription dated just weeks after publication, tying the book directly to the Burroughs family and to Tarzana itself.

Condition: 8vo, 383pp with the glossary leaf at rear. A. C. McClug's orange cloth with front ruled in blind and front and spine stamped in dark brown. Spine ends frayed and chipped; spine sunned with a small stain; boards lightly soiled with worn edges and frayed corners; hinges cracked at Title page and Glossary page at rear, but holding; offsetting opposite title page; text block browned with scattered stains; bookplate of Ella Oldham Burroughs on front pastedown. The unclipped $2.00 dust jacket shows darkening to the spine, soiling to panels, an 11 mm tear to the rear panel, and light edgewear.

A solid, very good example in a very good jacket. An uncommon McClurg first edition in jacket, and genuinely rare inscribed—especially with such a personal family inscription. Referenced in Zeuschner (1996) 821 and Zeuschner (2016) p. 511.

Provenance: Henry Studley “Harry” Burroughs; Ella Oldham Burroughs (Bookplate).
