A near fine copy of Edith Wharton's 1925 novel A Mother's Recompense in a very good, dust jacket.

A first printing of the trade edition with the parenthetical (1) at the end of page 342. Published by D. Appleton and Company, New York.

Condition: 8vo. 342 pages plus the three pages of ads for Wharton's books at the rear. Publishers' original vertically ribbed bright burgundy cloth, with titles and decoration stamped in gilt. Light wear to edges with lower corners bumped and spine ends softened. A May of 1925 gift inscription on the front free endpaper. A small neat "Burns Baltimore" bookseller label affixed to rear pastedown. The book is housed in a good but well-worn dust jacket, clipped at the extreme edges, but with the $2.00 price intact on the lower front flap. Orange paper lettered in black with gold leaf to all surfaces. The front cover is splitting along the spine but still holding together. Chipping and creasing along the edges, fold and spine tips and some sunning to the spine.

Overall, a nicer than usual copy of this 1925 first edition and printing.
