Ernest Hemingway — For Whom the Bell Tolls

New York: Charles Scribner’s Sons, October 1940 First Edition, First Printing; Second‑Issue Dust Jacket

A very good copy of Hemingway’s great Spanish Civil War novel, from the first printing of 75,000 copies, with the Scribner’s “A” on the copyright page confirming true first‑issue status. This example is housed in the original second‑issue dust jacket, correctly priced at $2.75 and bearing the photographer’s credit on the rear panel.

Physical Description

8vo. 471pp. Publisher’s pale brown cloth, the spine lettered in black on a red ground; Hemingway’s facsimile signature stamped in black on the front board. Top edge brown, other edges uncut.

Condition - The cloth shows light foxing to the spine with some fading to the spine titles, and gentle bumping to the corners. Spine tips exhibit mild softening. The interior is clean and unmarked, with only toning to the endpapers—a notably fresh text block for this title.

The unclipped dust jacket remains in very good condition, with creasing along the edges, chipping at the folds and spine tips, and a few scratches to the rear panel. A couple of small tears have been neatly repaired on the verso with acid‑free archival tape. Overall, a presentable and appealing jacket, retaining strong color and the correct issue points.

Notes - A solid, attractive example of the true first edition of For Whom the Bell Tolls, one of Hemingway’s most enduring works and a cornerstone of twentieth‑century American literature—scarce in collectible condition with the jacket intact.
