A very good first edition, first printing of Journey Cake, Ho! (1953), Ruth Sawyer’s rollicking New England tale brought to life by her son‑in‑law, Caldecott Medalist Robert McCloskey. A 1954 Caldecott Honor Book and one of the most charming collaborations in mid‑century children’s literature.
Thin 4to, 46 pages, patterned pictorial boards with matching endpapers. Illustrated throughout in McCloskey’s blue, white, and brown palette. Light rubbing and bumping to the corners and spine tips, a touch of fraying at the lower spine, and mild soiling/creasing to a few pages — otherwise clean and bright.
The original unclipped $2.50 dust jacket is present and in fair to good condition — scarce in any condition — showing some heavy wear: creasing, chipping, loss to the upper back panel and spine ends, and several old tape repairs on the verso. Still a solid example of a jacket that rarely survives.
A delightful, increasingly hard‑to‑find Caldecott Honor first printing from two giants of American children’s literature. Perfect for collectors of McCloskey, Sawyer, or mid‑century picture books.
