A beautifully rebound, highly collectible 1869 two‑volume First Edition set of Louisa May Alcott’s beloved classic—Little Women (First Edition, Second Printing) paired with Little Women, Part Second (First Edition, Second State). Each volume handsomely rebound in dark green Cawburn Goat leather from J. Hewit & Sons of Scotland, with gilt‑stamped spine titles and new gilt‑and‑floral decorated endpapers. A striking shelf presence and a wonderfully preserved example of this cornerstone of American literature.

 

Little Women — Part One (1869 First Edition, Second Printing) Boston: Roberts Brothers, 1869 - 341 pages. Frontispiece with tissue guard present. Title page dated 1869; copyright page dated 1868. No mention of Part Second on page 341. Ads at rear show “Little Women in one volume 16mo priced at $1.50” at the top of page 10—confirming the second printing. Condition: Some toning; 1871 gift inscription on front blank; intermittent foxing, a few finger smudges, chipping to a few page edges and light corner creasing to several pages. A solid, honest example with clean text and attractive modern binding.

First edition, second state, with the “Notice about Part First” on page [iv]; 8pp. ads with four entries on page 366; and “Handy Volume Series / I. / Happy Thoughts.” BAL 158, 159. One of only 2000 copies printed. Frontispiece with tissue guard present. Condition: Light chipping to the outer edge of a few pages; mild creasing; occasional spotting and toning. Provenance from the Townsend family, with their names and an 1871 date on the front blank prelim.

 

A standout, collector‑grade pairing of both 1869 volumes—freshly and expertly rebound, bibliographically correct, and carrying late 19th‑century provenance. A beautiful and desirable set of Alcott’s enduring classic.
