A nicer than usual copy of the 1958 Viking Press first trade edition of Steinbeck's Once There was a War in a very good Don Freeman designed dust jacket.
8vo. 233 pages in publishers' mustard cloth over marbled brown paper boards with red titles and topstain. Spine tips, lower front and upper rear corners lightly bumped and some toning and foxing to the endpapers. The dust jacket is unclipped and chipped at the fold and spine tips with a few closed tears now repaired, a small scrape to the paper on the front and some toning to the rear cover and flaps.
Overall, a very good copy of this 1958 first edition of one of Steinbeck's lesser-known titles featuring the World War II writings from his time as a war reporter in London, North Africa, Sicily, Italy.
