Published in 1976 by Houghton Mifflin Company, Boston, the book is housed in illustrator Wendell Minor’s striking dust jacket (price-clipped, very good+ with light edgewear, spotting, and faint foxing to the verso). Format: 8vo, 536 pages.
Binding: Publisher’s orange cloth with titles stamped in black to the spine, black endpapers, and orange topstain. Condition: Near fine, with a tiny bump to the upper front corner and slight softening to the lower spine tip. Dust jacket shows light wear but remains bright and attractive.
 
Significance:
This semi-autobiographical classic introduced readers to Conroy’s unforgettable character Bull Meecham, later immortalized by Robert Duvall in the acclaimed 1979 film adaptation. A handsome, collectible copy of a cornerstone of modern Southern literature.
