✨ “If men were angels, no government would be necessary.” — Alexander Hamilton

The Federalist Papers — New & Corrected Edition, 1831
Hamilton, Madison, Jay

Hallowell, ME: Glazier, Masters & Co., 1831.

This 1831 edition of The Federalist Papers carries unique historical weight. Published during James Madison’s lifetime, it incorporates corrections made by Madison himself and, for the first time in print, identifies the authorship of each essay. The volume also includes Hamilton’s Pacificus letters, Madison’s Helvidius essays, the Articles of Confederation, and the Constitution with amendments.

8vo. 542 pp ~ Good to Very Good overall. Structurally sound in its handsome modern binding, with expected age-toning and wear consistent with a nearly two-century-old volume. Bound in full sheep leather with gilt spine titles and new endpapers, the book bears the stamp of The Young Men’s Association for Mutual Improvement. Condition notes: toning, scattered foxing, occasional chipping and closed tears to early leaves, manuscript notes on the front blank prelim, and trimmed final pages (539–542) bound in with old tape repairs.

A significant artifact of American constitutional history, bridging the anonymity of the 1788 essays with their later attribution.
