December of 1822 Clement Moore writes a poem entitled "The Night Before Christmas" and reads it to his six children for the first time on Christmas Eve. This is the sought-after Porter and Coates 1883 "Bell Series" of illustrated poems printed on fine plate paper with cloth spine, beveled boards and gilt edges. It sold for $1.50 which was expensive at the time and was beautifully illustrated with twenty-two engravings from original illustrations by F.B. Schell, W. T. Smedley, A. Fredericks & H.R. Poore. 8vo. 6.5 x 7.75" Unpaginated - Publishers ad at rear.  Wear to the edges, corners rubbed, some chipping to the print on the front cover, some soiling to the boards. A neat restoration to the spine with tightening of signatures, a bit of foxing and a few finger smudges to interior pages. Overall, a nicer than normal copy of this nearly 150-year-old children's classic.
