An outstanding copy of the 1889 First Edition and printing beautifully bound by the Press of Berwick & Smith in Boston and published by D. Lothrop Company. The Story of the American Soldier in War & Peace by Eldridge S. Brooks with more than 50 illustrations by E.W. Kemble, L. J. Bridgman and more including the tissue-guarded frontis, "On the Ramparts" by Bridgman. Condition: 8vo. 9 x7 inches. 350 pages including the index, plus 1 page of advertisements for Eldridge Brooks other books. Hardcover, no Dustjacket, as issued. Decorative blue cloth boards stamped in blind and with gilt stamped titles and decoration to the front and spine. Slight spine lean, rubbing to the corner tips, softening with a bit of fraying to the upper spine end. Interior is in near fine condition with the spine reinforced and signatures tightened. A small cut to the paper on the "List of Illustrations" page that has been repaired. Overall, an attractive and sought after first edition that follows the evolution of the American soldier from the earliest colonial days with the Conquistadors through the American Revolution and on to the end of the Civil War.
