Once in a great while a book like this will suddenly appear in the marketplace. If you're a collector or dealer you grab it knowing that it is one-of-a-kind, or one of a small handful like it available anywhere in the world. This is the 100-year-old Special Holiday Gift Edition of A.A. Milne's children's book, "When We Were Very Young," Published by E.P. Dutton and Company in New York and shipped to customers in a gift box for the price of $3.00 just in time for Christmas. The 38th poem in the book, "Teddy Bear", that originally appeared in Punch magazine in February 1924, was the first appearance of the famous character Winnie-the-Pooh, first named "Mr. Edward Bear" by Christopher Robin Milne. 8vo. 100 pages. Publishers' cloth backed pictorial boards with matching dust jacket decorated with the color E.H. Shepard drawings. Both book and jacket appear new as if just shipped from the publisher in October of 1925. A barely noticeable 1/4" closed tear to the upper front cover and a tiny bump to the lower rear corner the only noticeable issues. Also included are the scarce publisher's prospectus and order form, the extremely rare unused custom greeting card and a small sample of letters received by the publisher from satisfied customers who had received advance copies. The red gift box is in surprisingly good condition with just light wear and rubbing to the paper on the corners and edges. The paper pastedown with the Shepard illustrations is still in fine condition. A small Providence, RI bookseller sticker is affixed to the bottom of the box. A very special copy celebrating its 100th birthday this year and ready for a new home!
